Sometimes we ask for practical gifts ("Mom, I'm broke... just please give me gift cards"), but sometimes we ask for things we know we will rarely use. A mortar & pestle is one such item. Perhaps I will make pesto with it, but how often do I really find myself saying "damn, the only thing this meal is lacking is some fresh pesto"? This little tool is simply just one I want to add to my kitchen; I can't really tell you why.
